I’m off on an adventure!

Well, in a manner of speaking, anyway!

I’ve been using this exercise bike we have at home for a couple of months, doing between ten and twenty kilometres a day in order to improve my fitness. In total I’ve done over 560km, quite a distance when you think about it. Not half as far as I’m going now, though…

I am using my exercise bike to cycle - virtually - from Land’s End to John O’ Groats.

In total this is about 1200km, more than twice what I’ve done in the past two months. I also want to finish it within about thirty-five days!

Not only is this a great way to improve my fitness, I’m also going to be writing about the places I virtually visit on my website, so I can also include some worthwhile educational and tourist aspects as well.

All in all I’m really looking forward to this challenge, improving my fitness and discovering lots of fascinating facts about the places I will be virtually staying!

The I have created a new page for this challenge, “Virtual Tour”. RSS readers will need a new feed - http://www.prosody.co.uk/virtual-tour/feed will work.

I’ll be updating every day, so come back to see where I am!

I am now in St Columb Major, Cornwall, where it is cloudy.

The idea of you cycling virtually on a bike strikes me as being wholly typical of your present situation. You’re making a lot of noise, doing a lot of work but ultimately you’re going nowhere. Whatever it is you’re doing now - and having been on your website a few times I am still puzzled as to exactly what that actually IS - why not postpone it for a moment and actually do this journey for real? Or is that what you’re all about - talking about things but ultimately not DOING them?
You’ve learnt to teach but don’t teach, you’re trying to write a novel but from what I can tell you’ve got nothing to say so far.
Don’t waste yourself, pal. DO SOMETHING.

I was cut off mid-advice there, apologies. Blame my laptop battery.

Even computer games, if you think about it, are simulations for genuine experience. Pretend adventures, not real ones. Go out there and feel, see, and achieve something because that’s where writing comes from - being there, doing things.
This is not meant to be harsh or abusive - if it sounds that way, then perhaps you’re being oversensitive, I’m just entitled to have my say - as much as you are. And the truth needs to be heard.
You’re a good man, James. Just don’t waste away.

Firstly, many thanks for your honest comments; they make doing this worthwhile.

You’re probably right - this is typical of me: I have ideas but they rarely go anywhere; I want to do things but can’t seem to knuckle down enough to finish them. There’s lots I want to accomplish but I don’t quite know what yet.

Again, thanks for your advice. I know it wasn’t intended to be abusive - trust me, in all my time online I’ve had much worse abuse! - and I welcome feedback of any kind.

Glad it didn’t offend. I have genuinely enjoyed checking up on your webpage - in fact I find myself compelled to keep seeing what you have (or haven’t!) been up to. You’re obviosuly a sensitive and thoughtful soul. It’s not easy when you find yourself being hurtled into the no-longer-young and find you don’t know exactly what you want to do.

I’m very glad to hear you enjoy the site. I know it’s a little slapdash in terms of content, but this is the majority of what I’ve been doing. Not a lot I know, but what’s here I enjoy and I’m glad you do too.

As for the latter, I can only agree and hope that the wisdom of age and wider world experience will soon direct me on the right path. Until then, do enjoy coming back to read more of my non-adventures!

James
